The Paschal Candle
The Paschal Candle is a large, white candle, traditionally displayed on a tall stand. The candle is often decorated with symbols of Christ's resurrection, such as a cross or an image of the resurrected Christ. The Paschal candle represents Jesus' resurrection and triumph over death and is a symbol of hope and new life.
The Paschal Candle has a long history and carries significant meaning and symbolism in Easter services. Traditionally, the candle is lit during the Easter Vigil, symbolising the light of Christ's resurrection overcoming the darkness of the tomb. Paschal Candles are also used at certain other times during the church calendar, particularly during the Easter season (Paschal-tide) and for baptisms and funerals as a reminder of Christ’s presence. The Paschal Candle holds a special place. It’s not just a candle; it’s a vivid representation of Christ, the light of the world, to remind the faithful of Jesus Christ’s resurrection and enduring presence.
Our Paschal Candle – Dedicated to Canon Tom Cowen BEM
The Paschal Candle that you see in our church today is renewed every year at Easter time. The stand that it sits upon was installed in 2025. It is made of oak and is dedicated to a long-standing and very special member of our congregation, Canon Tom Cowen BEM (1933 - 2023).

Tom and his wife Sarah, were long-standing and much loved members of our church family, Tom even used to sing in the church choir as a small boy. Tom was a great servant to, and an integral part of, our church in so many ways. He was a Diocesan Reader, a school governor and a lay-preacher - for many years conducting the Remembrance-Day service at the Cenotaph on Scrogg Road (at the other end of our church-yard). He had many links with the local military cadets and territorial army units. He loved children and was always keen to encourage them in the ways of the Christian faith.
The candle stand you see before you was purchased in 2025 through the generosity of Tom’s family. It contains the dedication “Sir, we would see Jesus” (John 12:20-21), which was one of Tom’s favourite biblical quotes.
